10 BAUER RB 50 Drilling Rigs for Irrigation Project in Algeria

  • BAUER Maschinen is supplying 10 RB 50 mobile multipurpose drilling rigs for a large-scale agricultural and irrigation project in Algeria.
  • 710 agricultural irrigation wells are planned for the first phase of the project. 10 BAUER RB 50 rigs form part of the overall drilling fleet deployed for the programme, alongside drilling rigs operated by other drilling contractors.
  • In addition to the drilling rigs, BAUER is providing drilling tools, mud treatment systems, casing cementation plants, spare parts, and service support.

Adrar, Algeria – BAUER Maschinen GmbH has sold 10 RB 50 mobile multipurpose drilling rigs to BALADNA Group. The rigs are intended for a large-scale agricultural project in the province of Adrar in southern Algeria, where they will drill groundwater wells to irrigate agricultural land. The overall project covers approximately 219,000 ha, including around 70,000 ha of cropland designated for growing various crops for animal feed production, aiming to establish a large-scale integrated dairy and livestock production complex to strengthen Algeria’s domestic milk production and reduce dependence on imports.

During the first phase, 710 agricultural irrigation wells are to be constructed within two years. The BAUER RB 50 rigs constitute part of the overall drilling capacity deployed for this programme, with other drilling contractors and drilling rigs also engaged in the groundwater well construction works. The wells will be drilled to target depths between 250 and 350 m using different drilling methods: mainly direct circulation, but also flooded reverse circulation (RC) and down-the-hole hammer drilling (DTH).

The order for the 10 RB 50 rigs was placed with BAUER Maschinen GmbH in early September 2025. By mid-November 2025, the first rig had already begun operating on site. All 10 drilling rigs were delivered within approximately 28 weeks.

Predominant Geology

The wells in the province of Adrar tap groundwater in a hyper-arid sedimentary basin of the Sahara. One of the region’s key groundwater resources is the so-called Continental Intercalaire, a Lower Cretaceous aquifer. It consists predominantly of permeable sandstones, sands, and gravels, interspersed with clay-rich, less permeable layers. Older sedimentary formations lie beneath the aquifer.

Climatic Conditions

In addition to the geological conditions, the climate and tight project schedule place significant demands on the drilling operations. In Adrar, summer air temperatures can exceed 49 °C. At the same time, temperatures can fluctuate considerably over the course of a day. Sand and dust, combined with a tightly scheduled project timeline, add further challenges.

Technology, Equipment, and Service from a Single Source

“On a project of this scale, it is not just about the performance of an individual machine. What matters is that the rigs, equipment, spare parts, service, combined with BAUER know-how in drilling methods, all work together throughout the entire operating period. That is why we worked with the customer to put together a package that also includes a service level agreement during ongoing drilling operations,” says Mohamed Saadi, Managing Director BAUER Equipment Maghreb.

RB 50 Designed for a Range of Drilling Methods

The RB 50 is a mobile multipurpose drilling rig used for applications including water well drilling, exploration drilling, geothermal drilling, and geotechnical work. Its modular design allows the equipment configuration to be adapted to different operating conditions and drilling methods.

Depending on the configuration and geological conditions, the rig can be used for air-lift and other reverse circulation drilling methods, direct circulation drilling, wireline core drilling, down-the-hole hammer drilling, and dry rotary drilling, among other methods. The RB 50 can drill to depths of up to 1,200 m, depending on the geology and the size and weight of the drilling tool used.

“For the customer, key factors in the decision included not only drilling performance but also ease of operation, BAUER’s experience with a wide range of drilling methods, and a coordinated service concept,” says Mohamed Saadi.

 Complete Package for Drilling Operations

In addition to the 10 RB 50 rigs, the scope of supply includes drilling fluid treatment systems, drilling accessories and tools, spare parts, and after-sales services. BAUER also supported the commissioning of the rigs and continues to assist the customer through regular on-site visits addressing questions related to drilling operations and maintenance.

Support is provided directly by the BAUER team in Germany in cooperation with subsidiaries and partners in Africa. This gives the customer access to both technical support from the manufacturer and regional contacts.

BAUER mobile multipurpose drilling rigs from the RB series have been operating in North Africa for more than 25 years. The current project marks the first collaboration between BALADNA Group and BAUER Maschinen GmbH. “We are pleased that the customer chose BAUER for this extensive project. With 10 rigs, the associated equipment, and our technical support, we will be supporting the drilling operations over an extended period. For us, this also marks the beginning of a new collaboration in a market where our RB drilling rigs have already been operating successfully for many years,” emphasizes Mohamed Saadi.
