RISK AND QUALITY MANAGEMENT
RISK MANAGEMENT
Minimizing risks and maximizing opportunities is key to the success of any business. The Group's diversified activities across three business segments and in widely differing countries give rise to a range of individual risks. It is essential that these should be correctly appraised and appropriately managed. A cross-segment risk management process seeks to ensure that no risk poses a hazard to the continued existence of the Group or substantial parts of it.
This requires that an appropriate early-warning system be established and operated; that risks be properly identified and assessed; that countermeasures be initiated promptly; that the continued existence of the business and its ongoing profitability be appropriately safeguarded; and that risk costs be cut. A key factor in achieving these aims is that the employees responsible do not delegate their responsibilities upwards, but are willing to act when and where the risk is identified, utilizing the available flexibility with regard to necessary countermeasures.

The identification and assessment of risk has a direct impact on the potential to exploit business opportunities, so identifying risks and utilizing opportunities to create new products and services is crucial. Whether in developing new machinery and engineering techniques, or in establishing new fields of business, such as the recent creation of the Resources segment, our Group has always been highly innovative – enabling us to generate and safeguard lasting success on global markets.

QUALITY MANAGEMENT
The leading position enjoyed by the BAUER Group as a service provider and machinery manufacturer in the field of specialist foundation engineering is founded on two key pillars: our great innovative strength and the high quality standards which we apply to all our products and services. Sustaining this position also demands that our quality standards be continuously improved.
In the Construction segment – and particularly in its specialist foundation engineering operations – the foundations and underground engineering works we carry out are vital to the stability of the buildings and infrastructure installations built upon them. Since such underground workings will not be visible once the job is complete, we have to be certain that everything has been carried out with the ultimate care and attention to detail. On the other hand, it also means that the client must place great trust in us.
Continuous monitoring of the works – from the planning stage, through the execution phase to final completion – is vital. Quality assurance plans exist for the various construction processes, with monitoring based on specified test procedures and continuous documentation of test results. A particularly important aspect of this is regular coordination and agreement of procedures between our site manager and the client during the project execution phase.
The Quality Management department – a neutral, independent unit not tied to cost or sales targets – regularly conducts process, product and project audits on construction sites. On completion of the works, questionnaires are distributed and one-on-one discussions conducted in order to ascertain customer satisfaction. Findings from these surveys are incorporated into future planning processes so as to ensure that performance is continuously improved.
Bauer machinery products have established a good name among customers over many years thanks to their outstanding quality and durability. This is particularly important as the machines often have to cope with extremely difficult ground and hostile climatic conditions. Whether in sand, rock or ultra-hard granite, in the icy temperatures of Russia or the searing heat of Africa – Bauer machinery can operate in any environment.
Our machines generally have a service life of eight to ten years. They are then often bought by smaller construction contractors and continue to be used all over the world. Spare parts enquiries and the long-standing relationships we enjoy with some of our partners are evidence that our machinery is quite capable of exceeding a service life of 20 years.
We recondition used machinery for our customers and for our own needs at our factories and workshop centres all over the world, restoring them to perfect working order and upgrading them to the latest state of the art. Alongside the durability and quality of our products, the efficiency and environmental compatibility of the materials and substances used in them are important aspects.
The company's established approach to quality management has also been adopted by the most recently created Resources segment – whether in the fabrication of well engineering materials by the Materials division or in the high standards of service execution provided by the Exploration & Mining and Environment divisions. Quality – and thus customer satisfaction – are particularly important to us in our most recently established segment, just as in our more long-standing business areas.
